The 2021 photo series “Sugar” was inspired by the photographer’s experience in a relationship with an abusive sugar daddy during a time of immense poverty. Laura explores issues like power dynamics, fear, and horror in a series that reflects the feelings of existential angst felt at the time, and felt by many people in unhealthy relationships. Every relationship, even functional, healthy relationships have power dynamics. These are not something we can get away from as a species that relies heavily on connection and community for our survival. All photos were taken in the harsh, barren landscapes of Death Valley, CA and Nevada.
